Located on the pristine shores of Horseshoe Bay, the Port Elliot SLSC aims to develop a visual language of elements, capturing the local context of the bay and translating this into the architecture of the Surf Club. From the erosive qualities of sea spray, to the weathering qualities of the lichen covered rocks, this design employs a material pallet that captures these textural and earthy tones throughout the building. Both the curvature of Horseshoe Bay, the nearby lookout and rock formations have each generated an architecturally responsive form that plays on the curve, height and abstract patterning of the natural landscape.

The centre has been designed as an integrated development ensuring that an architectural theme carries across all buildings. Each anchor tenant has a brand aesthetic which has informed a specific design response at the entrance to each store, however, the overall centre has been developed to create a contemporary comfortable and activated space. Building access points are clearly identified through architectural intervention and wayfinding. The proposed development employs a single architectural theme which establishes a new centre which utilises a simple architectural design and robust palette of materials. These two methodologies allow for future buildings to be established in a complementary style.

This project proposes a twenty two storey mixed-use building to create 180 hotel rooms, 24 apartments and commercial uses at ground and mezzanine level. The building will provide views to the north across the Adelaide Park Lands and river and to the west to the coast. It is proposed on the southern edge of Light Square on the fringe of the Adelaide CBD. The design approach further tests the boundaries of modular construction technology by rotating the modules to create a taller and more slender building footprint whilst maximising the number of hotel rooms per module. The facade design introduces subtle chambers which read as fins up the building to provide articulation and solar shading to the western facade. At the upper levels the facade is broken to create deep balconies for the apartments. At the upper levels the building is tiered to provide shared terrace and amenity spaces which exploit the western views and orientation.

This project proposes a twenty storey mixed-use building to create sixty-three – one, two, three and four bedroom apartments including a rooftop penthouse. The design approach for this project involves the sensitive re-use of an existing heritage listed building whilst creating a new, efficient, innovative and contemporary mixed-use residential development above. The apartments are designed to exploit the buildings prime orientation and aspect, adjacent to one of Adelaide’s most significant green squares, and will provide a high level of resident amenity exemplified in their open-plan layout, large external terraces and interior finishes. The facade design introduces subtle chamfers to the concrete panels to create depth and articulation. The folded sunscreens provide privacy and visual interest and act as a lighter filigree to the mass of the building. The final design proposal is the result of an iterative design process which necessarily included key stakeholders including Adelaide City Council, Development Assessment Commission, Heritage SA and the Office of the Government Architect.

This project consists of a sixteen storey, 4.5 star and 244 room modular hotel with gym, conference and restaurant facilities on a gateway site on the north-west corner of the Adelaide CBD. The site is ideally located to provide short and longer term accommodation to cater for the demands of the New Royal Adelaide Hospital (NRAH) which lies a short walk from the hotel. The facade design exploits the rigorous nature of this building typology and provides depth and articulation with the folded sun-shading devices. North facing winter gardens provide further solar mitigation whilst also providing an acoustic buffer. The site was identified very early in the process as being optimum for a modular building. The relatively small footprint, the potential for height and the required use as a hotel – which is necessarily repetitious – were ideal criteria for a modular building.

The, mass, form and scale of the development does not compromise the development at the locality to the south. The building is physically separated from the historic built form by both the at-grade car park and North Parade to the south, such that the increased height sits comfortably in the context without affecting the prominence of the historic streetscape to the south east. The materials such as red brick and steel complement the character of the locality. The setback of the tower element behind the podium facade also attenuates the perceived scale of the building from the immediate surrounds.

This project consists of the construction of a mixed use multi-storey building comprising retail, medical (consulting rooms, theatre rooms and ancillary office), conference, gym, aged care and retirement living land uses with ancillary car parking (basement and decked), loading, swimming pool and landscaping. The proposed building been designed and developed according to the principles of sustainable development by providing higher residential densities and places of work in areas that are in close proximity to areas of key public transport. The building has been designed with appropriate building orientation, building features, and passive sustainability measures. The proposed built form provides an exemplary design solution and an appropriate outcome for the locality. The proposal incorporates a podium element which provides a similar bulk and scale to the surrounding built form elements to the east. A transition level creates negative space between the podium and the upper levels which creates a sense of separation between the built form elements. The upper levels incorporate a varied built form with strong negative spaces, breaking down the mass of the façade, such that when viewed from oblique angles along Elder Smith Road and Elder Drive, the appearance reads as that of multiple slender elements.

This Gateway project represents the connection of people to the environment through education and history. At the centre of the project is the heart: a gathering point referencing both traditional African and indigenous habitation. The heart Space act as the communal space before introducing visitors to their journey into Wild Africa, providing protection from the harsh weather conditions whilst offering small glimpses to the vast surrounds. This celebration of arrival builds anticipation for the imminent experience. The built form is divided into two distinct elements. The convergence of the curved ribbons represents the intertwining of indigenous and African cultures embodying the inherent connection with the land, plants and animals. The iconic, yet implicit, expression of the forms invite engagement, interpretation and discussion by visitors. The design reflects an understanding that conservation starts with a humanity that has an appreciation of nature and is enhanced out of their visceral experience. The gateway representation provides an iconic and memorable transitional experience from Australia to Africa. Each visitor is to leave as an ambassador of the Monarto Zoo.

The proposed development for GSA student accommodation, is to be an exemplar project for Adelaide, with a focus on new types of living in a collegiate environment, and a focus on the life and learning of students. Being located on North Terrace, required a building that would sit amongst the wide variety of architectural styles, but most importantly, seek a civic scale and presence to allow it so sit comfortably in this important streetscape. As a contemporary tower, we have been able to express visually the uses and activity within, and highlight the innovative nature of its use with inclusion of significant communal living areas for students at different vantage points within the building. These act as a means to occupy all parts of the proposal. GSA North Terrace creates a new type of Urban College, furthering the nature of what constitutes a civic building and how Student Accommodation can contribute positively to the City.
